The basic life sciences research center, which started in the year 2000 under the guidance of Dr. Dr G M Taori and Prof H.F. Daginawala, to undertakes research activities in Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Biotechnology on the problems faced on the clinical side in diagnosis, pathogenesis and treatment. Central India Institute of Medical Sciences, Nagpur, started the full-fledged Research Centre in 2000. The major aim was to undertake research activity in clinical and basic sciences related to human illness. For the same purpose, Research Centre has been recognized as a Research Institute by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), (recognition no. F.No.14/14/88-TU-V) Govt. of India since its inception.
CIIMS has well-equipped Research Centre with all the modern amenities including Advance microbiology lab, Animal Cell culture lab, Molecular Laboratory facility, Immunology Lab, proteomics laboratory and animal house facility.
Presently, Research Centre has elaborated 20 years research experience in the field of various infectious diseases like tuberculosis, including tuberculosis meningitis, HIV, Neuroinfections, Chikungunya, Viral infections of the CNS like HSV, CMV, Chandipura, infection, etc. and Zoonotic infection of humans, M. Bovis infection, Listeriosis, Brucellosis, Scrub typhus, Cryptococcal antigen, Covid-19 infection and antibiotic-associated diarrheal infection due to C. Difficile and noninfectious disorders, stroke and thrombosis.
Research Centre, has Published 126 publications related to various aspects of the disease including diagnosis, pathogenesis, vaccine development, and new biomarkers for various diseases. More than 150 papers have been presented in different National and International Conferences.
In the last 15 years, funding of Rs 6 crore has been sanctioned by the Government of India to run our research projects. Funding has been received from Department of Biotechnology, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, Indian Council of Medical Research, by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Central Mine Planning and Design Institute etc. In addition to that, we also received the international funding from Nottingham Digestive Diseases Biomedical Research Unit, National Institute of Health Research, University of Nottingham, UK, Funding in the form of providing research material from Colorado State University.
The Institute has been granted two Indian patents for the development of diagnostic kits, one for the diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis and second for the diagnosis of extra CNS tuberculosis infection and four patents are under communication.
Research Centre has also been recognized for the Ph.D. program in Biochemistry and Microbiology in Science Faculty by RTM, Nagpur University and was with Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences University, Nagpur in Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical Microbiology and Medical Biotechnology in Medicine faculty. Till date Total, 14 research scholars have already been awarded their Ph.D Degree (8 by RTM Nagpur University and 6 by Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences University) in different subjects such as Biochemistry, Microbiology, Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical Microbiology, and Medical Biotechnology. Presently one PhD scholar has submitted the thesis to Nagpur University for evaluation in microbiology subject.
Research Centre, has developed more than 40 advanced molecular, immunological and Microbiology based indigenous diagnostic methods for rapid and early diagnosis of bacterial and viral infections described above and identified novel prognostic marker for stroke. These diagnostic tests are used for routine diagnosis within CIIMS, and other hospitals from Nagpur and around Nagpur region.
The research Centre also started a research support service for the Research Scholars, Scientist, teachers at a Nominal cost to promote the education and research in the Nagpur region. Till date, more than 40 pilot outsourcing projects have been implemented at CIIMS. Similarly, the research center also conducts the M.Sc. dissertation study. Till date 168 Students from different universities, (majority from Nagpur University) have completed their dissertation from Research Centre, CIIMS and 13 students have completed 6 months skill development certificate course.
Research Centre, CIIMS also conduct hands-on training workshops in Immunological, Molecular and Animal Cell Cultural techniques for graduate and postgraduate students, researchers and teachers in life sciences and provide research services to research scholar in and around the Nagpur time to time. Research Centre has collaborated with more than 50 National and International Institutions.
