Department of internal medicine is an integral part of the institute. This department as a separate unit was started in 1992. It has not only O.P.D. and indoor facilities, but also provides consultative services to other clinical departments at the institute.
Besides the clinical and research activities department runs teaching activities like basic science lectures, bed side clinics, seminars, journal club and death meetings

‘Prevention is better than cure’, an exclusive department of Preventive Health checks is also managed through various health checks designed to suit the needs of different age groups. There is emphasis on early detection and management of lifestyle related diseases like Metabolic syndrome, obesity, Dyslipidemias apart from chronic ailments like Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension and malignancies.

Internists are personal physicians who provide long-term, comprehensive care in the office and the hospital, managing both common and complex illnesses in adolescents, adults, and the elderly. Internists are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, infections, and diseases affecting the heart, blood, kidneys, joints, and digestive, respiratory and vascular systems. They are also trained in the essentials of primary care internal medicine which incorporates an understanding of disease prevention, wellness, substance abuse, mental health and effective treatment of common problems of the eyes, ears, skin, nervous system, and reproductive organs. An internal medicine physician’s primary responsibilities include heath maintenance and disease screening, the diagnosis and care of acute and chronic medical conditions, management of patients with multiple, complex medical problems, and serving as consultants to other disciplines such as surgery, obstetrics, and family medicine. An internist’s work is characterized by extensive knowledge and skill in diagnosis and treatment.
The department is manned by physicians with expertise in ventilatory care and provides advanced care with the support of the hospital infrastructure including intensive care units of different specialties, state of art monitoring equipments and technology, bronchoscopy, endoscopy and a 24 x 7 support of radiology, modern laboratory, high-end imaging facilities, a 24 x 7 operational and emergency unit. The aim is to provide long term comprehensive care and manage both common and complex illnesses.
A comprehensive diabetic clinic in collaboration with diet consultant Mrs. Jayashree Pendharkar, MSc is run by the department. She is available for consultation for the OPD as well as indoor patients.
Hospital has facility for complete cardiac work-up except cardiac intervention. This facility available for OPD as well as IPD patient during both emergency and routine procedure.
