CIIMS

Neurology

Department of Neurology was started soon after the inauguration of the OPD section of CIIMS on 5th July, 1984. Neurology and Neurosurgery work hand in hand, both in patient's care.

The department of Neurology is one of the finest in town with highly qualified senior consultants, and backed by a state-of-the-art clinical neurophysiology lab (EMG, NCV, EEG, Evoked Potentials), neuroradiology including computed tomography (CT), digital subtraction angiography (DSA) and interventional neuroradiology and excellent neuropathological backup, the department is equipped to manage any neurological disorder. State-of-the-art critical care units (CCU) are geared to deal rapidly with 'brain attack' and other neurological emergencies round the clock. A physiotherapy and rehabilitation department offers exceptional neuro rehabilitation to help stricken patients overcome their disabilities.

On an average 25,000 patients, new and old, are seen in the department every year. Approximately 900 EEGs are done yearly. More than 1000 nerve conduction, electromyography and Evoked Potential are done every year.

In-door neurology service started in 1987. It shares the intensive Care Facilities, with the Department of Neurosurgery and Critical Care Medicine. The cases which are admitted are of varied types in Neurology. These include Gullian Barre Syndrome, Myasthenia Gravis, Periodic Paralysis, nutritional deficiency, disorders, strokes, metabolic problems, status epilepticus, infections of CNS etc. The department is well recognized by the people in this region for its dedicated services. It serves as a referral center in and around 500 kms. of Nagpur. The department also runs movement disorder clinic where Botilinum toxin is administered in various patients of dystonia, hemifacial spasm, Blepherospasm tension type headache and cerebralpalphy.

We are the first comprehensive stroke care centre in the Central India.

CIIMS has world class facilities that include stroke unit, Neuro-radiological services including catheterization lab. We regularly perform intravenous thrombolysis, and intra arterial thrombolysis. Recently we have acquired the required infrastructure for mechanical clot removal.
Team of stroke neurologist, neurosurgeons and radiologist provide 24x7 services.

We provide rehabilitation, secondary stroke prevention through stroke clinic, carotid stenting, intra cranial stenting and carotid endarterectomy. Stroke clinic runs once a week on every Thursday.

The Stroke Center's multi-specialty care approach utilizes the expertise of a large group of physicians and staff with specialty training in the treatment of Stroke. Stroke patient care is coordinated by a team of Vascular Neurologists and Neuro-intensivists who work closely with emergency medicine physicians, neurosurgeons, neurointerventionalists, neuroradiologists, vascular surgeons, cardiologists, physiatrists, neuro-trained nurses, and stroke ancillary care specialists (physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, respiratory therapists, care managers, and social workers).

Department of neuropsychology at the CIIMS hospital, has a well equiped Neuropsychological assessment, counselling and rehabilitation unit. The unit offers assessment and rehabilitation services for Neurological, Neurosurgical and Psychiatric Conditions.

Neuropsychological Assessment and Neuropsychological remediation are the twin branches of clinical neuropsychology. The unit offers neurodevelopmental assessments, neuropsychological testing. NIMHANS neuropsychology battery, neuropsychology battery for children, neuropsychological bettery for intractable epilepsy is frequently used.

We also conduct aptitude testing, IQ testing, personality assessments. We provide counseling and a special training module is provided for mentally retarded children.Cognitve retraining retraining is given to patients with brain damage to improve their functioning.Hospital and home based retraining aprroaches are used.Detail assessment of conditions like alzeimers, dementia, epilepsy, stroke, depression, ocd, attention deficits and hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorders is being conducted. Behaviour therapy for patients with depression, anxiety disorders is done.

Neuroelectrophysiology lab may be unique in center India and has following facilities.

  • EEG
  • VIDEO EEG
  • EMG / NCV

EEG and VIDEO EEG:-

The center has EEG, long-term Video EEG, bed side EEG in ICU, electrocorticography and intraoperative monitoring facilities. Approximately 200 EEGs are done every month including pedatric and adult cases. In addition, bed-side EEG monitors for management of status epilepticus are in place.

The epilepsy monitoring unit is equipped with state-of-the-art video EEG monitors used for both pre-surgical evaluation and syndromic classification of the epilepsy sub types. Till date more than 500 patients have availed Video-EEG facilities for different indications.

Round the clock neurotechnologists, nursing and medical support is provided to the patients admitted for long-term and short-term video EEG monitoring.

CIIMS in the only center in Central India which has comprehensive epilepsy care center with facilities for epilepsy Regular patient management conferences are conducted for problem solving and surgical selection of patients with refractory epilepsy that have undergone pre-surgical evaluation.

EMG / NCV / EP

The electrophysiology department was established in 1984 by Dr.G.M. Taori.

Till date more than 30,000 studies have been carried out in patients with various neuromuscular problems.

This facility performs under the guidance of neurology department but has independent faculty which is trained and is vastly experienced.
The tests are performed on daily basis during routing hours.

The other facilities this department are

  1. NCV
  2. "F" waves
  3. "H" Reflex
  4. EMG
  5. Repetitive Nerve Stimulation
  6. Tensilon / Neostigmine Test
  7. Reflex Studies
  8. Silent Period Study
  9. SSR - Sympathetic Skin Response
  10. BOTOX Injection
  11. Evoked Potential
    • Somato Sensory Evoked Potentials
    • Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials
    • Visual Evoked Potentials
